A winner of several international competitions, with first prize and the Zarzuela prize at the 2008 Placido Domingo Operalia, young Mexican soprano Maria Katzarava has already sung in many of the world’s major opera houses including ROH Covent Garden in London, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Liceu de Barcelona, Opera de Oviedo, Opéra de Lausanne, Florida Grand Opera in Miami, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Teatro Comunale diBologna, Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Teatro Regio di Parma, working with such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Donato Renzetti, Daniel Oren, Alain Guingal, Gustavo Dudamel, Placido Domingo, Paolo Carignani and Michele Mariotti.

Her repertoire includes such leading soprano roles as Juliette (Roméo ed Juliette), Elvire (Muette de Portici), Marguerite (Faust), Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor), Violetta (La traviata), Gilda (Rigoletto), Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Antonia/Stella/Giulietta (Les contes d’Hoffmann), Tatjana (Evgeny Onegin).

During the 2010–2011 season she made her London Covent Garden debut as Juliette in Roméo et Juliette under the baton of Daniel Oren. In the same role she triumphed at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Opéra de Lausanne, Florida Grand Opera, Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, and in Moscow.

In July 2014, she took part in the annual concert of Andrea Bocelli at Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, under the baton of Placido Domingo, and in 2015 she returned to Teatro del Silenzio as Liù in Turandot under the baton of Zubin Mehta.

During the 2015–2016 season she performed Fidelio (Leonore) at Charlotte Opera, Il Duca d’Alba (Amelia) at Opera de Oviedo, La traviata (Violetta) at Teatro Verdi in Padova, her company debut with Liceu de Barcelona as Desdemona in Otello, Carmen (Micaela) at Teatro Comunale in Bologna under the baton of Michele Mariotti, Faust (Marguerite) at Opéra de Lausanne, Beethoven’s IX Symphony at the St. Denis Festival and Turandot (Liù) at the Peralada Festival.

She also took part in a gala concert in Mumbai under the baton of Zubin Mehta and in a gala concert opposite Juan Diego Florez, making her debut at the Musikverein in Vienna.

She opened the 2016/17 season performing Madama Butterfly (title role) and Carmen (Micaela) at Teatro Massimo di Palermo, followed by a recital at the Wigmore Hall in London and Stiffelio (Lina) at the Konzerthausin Berlin.

Among her future plans are productions of Tosca (title role) at Grand Théâtre du Tours, Stiffelio (Lina) at Teatro Regio di Parma, Die Fledermaus (Roselinde) at Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, and Simon Boccanegra (Amelia) at Opéra de Lausanne.

 

Francisco Poyato studied piano, composition and conducting in Barcelona. More recently he has specialized in Lied with Prof. Hartmut Höll and Mitsuko Shirai at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he has also studied pianoforte and historical interpretation with Prof. Anthony Spiri.

He pursued his pianistic studies with Frédéric Gevers, Alain Motard, Menahem Pressler and Dimitri Bashkirov among others, and his specialization in Lied with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Thomas Hampson, Robert Holl and Edith Mathis. He has received several awards both as a solo pianist and as a Lied accompanist.

From 1994 to 2001 he taught repertoire at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and was also invited to be one of the teachers at the Mozarteum’s Summer Academy. Since 2001 he has also worked as a professor of Lieder, teaching piano-singer duos at Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya. He founded the first “Victoria de los Ángeles” Lied master class in Spain, in 2014. The master class focuses on Spanish and Catalan songs.

Poyato has led masterclasses at Berlin’s Hans Eisler University and the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe, being invited by Wolfram Rieger and Hartmut Höll respectively. During 2014, he regularly gave classes in Lied at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe.

He has worked with Mitsuko Shirai, Ruth Ziesak, Nuria Rial, Claron McFadden, Elena Copons, Xavier Sabata, Marta Mathéu, Assumpta Mateu, and Liesbeth Devos among others. He has also been a professor at Jordi Savall’s Early Music Academy. Together with Assumpta Mateu and Lluis Vilamajó he has recorded the complete works of Eduard Toldrà for Columna Música.

Poyato has performed in Spain and across Europe. Concert venues include Auditori de Barcelona, Palau de la Música, Maestranza Theater of Seville, Lisinzski Concert Hall, and the Mozarteum. He has also performed at events such as Schubertiadas in Barcelona and Vilabertran, Torroella de Montgrí Festiva Festival, and the Manuel de Falla Festival.

He has made recordings for WDR Radio in Germany, Zagreb Radio and Radio Catalunya among others.
